Mounting of Column Starter Bars

Today we completed all excavation and commenced blinding of column bases and mounting of starter bars in the foundation.
There are a total of 27 columns in each building. The structural system adopted for the building is the rigid frame structure comprising of columns, beams and slabs interacting to create a solid mass.
Tomorrow is expected to be a very busy day as we plan to do concrete works in the foundation footing for both buildings.
Concrete mixers rented from a rental outlet have been delivered to site ahead of the anticipated concrete works tomorrow.

DEEP ROMANCE WITH MOBILE APPS DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

One of the main things that strike one immediately you meet an Architect would probably be his always having a laptop around. This is because most Architectural design and drafting works are done with one computer software or another.

Coming from a background like this, it is little wonder why an Architect may have crossed over line and has become enthralled with making mobile apps. This deep romance with mobile apps began gradually. from an innocent desire to make ends meet back in 2016, to setting up a full fledged mobile app development company churning out insightful applications in different spheres of endeavor.
www.lightgates.app
The first mobile app that I ever developed was a school management app. It was specifically targeted for the nursery, primary and secondary schools niche. The need to do such an app became obvious after my team and I had faced some challenges trying to convince some indigenous schools to use our web based version of a school management app.

The challenges faced ranged from, non-availability of computers or in some cases insufficient supply of computers for efficient web administration, consistent power outages, general unwillingness of teachers to do any work with a computer other than the classroom hour, some teachers do not own personal computers or in some cases are unable to afford the high cost of internet data, some school administrators capitalize on these loopholes to exploit the school directors financially, need to train and retrain teachers on the use of the software repeatedly each time the shifted jobs, etc.

These and many other challenges necessitated the invention of the same solution on mobile phones in the form of a mobile app. Once we agreed this was the best line of action, we set forth to it with tenacious determination and a hunger to disrupt the status-quo which was filled with frustration due to some of the challenges described above.

Many years down the road, we have developed many other applications tailored for different industries ranging from fashion, medicine, construction and e-commerce.

Read More about the apps we have developed and how you can get yours maybe!

REFLECTIONS ON THE CURRICULUM FOR STUDY OF ARCHITECTURE IN NIGERIA

As a licensed Architect and now a lecturer, reflections on the curriculum and duration for the study of Architecture in Nigeria comes naturally to one. This is mostly necessitated by the observed deficiencies revealed through interaction with some Nigerian university graduates including Architecture graduates in the past.

As a student of Architecture, this nature of thought never crossed my heart, because all we thought about was how to become the next graduate with first class honors. However now, that we have achieved that and moreso even joined the academia as a key player (lecturer) one cant help but speak out about this.

My personal opinion is that the four year duration for the award of Bacherlors degree in Architecture (B.Sc. Architecture) is grossly insufficient; considering the volume of work required to be done. I would expansiate more on the reason for this in my next post, but suffice it to say now that; I would move for an adjustment to a total duration of five (5) years - at least.

Also, the two-year mandatory Master programme which must be done in order to qualify for licensure amongst other things is non-negotiable.

However there are suggestions from some meaningful stakeholders that the practise licensure examination which is currently taken as a seperate exam after a minimum of two years puppilage under a licensed Architect, should be integrated as part of the MSc. final exam and administered by the Architects Registration Council Of Nigeria (ARCON) at the university level.

What do you think about this? Let us discuss your opinions in the comment section below.

WE ARE IN BATTLE - WHICH SIDE ARE YOU FIGHTING?

The battle between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness is stiffer in our time more than ever before.

It is so stiff that the agents of the kingdom of darkness have their very existence dependent on it. They cannot rest neither can they eat, nor sleep until their mission is accomplished. They are on a ticking deadline. They have been mandated to kill, to destroy and to divert the destiny of the righteous unsuspecting ignorant careless children of God who do not know the power they carry . They have been anointed with different satanic gifts to lie, seduce, deceive, dissuade, discourage, lure, constrain, attack, disarm and  ridicule those who call themselves the children of God.

FIVE REASONS TO WRITE A BOOK

1). You Know Something Enough; You feel A Need to Put it in Writing for Posterity Sake:

Here most text books and academic instructional guides fall under this category. Usually written by industry experts who lay bare hard empirical data for the readers education and enlightenment.

2). You Have Discovered A New Idea or Invented Something Worth Sharing :
New findings in a niche can become the reason for a writer or a group of researchers to decide to publish a book. In this case the individual or the group have developed a new method of doing something that is worth sharing to the general public.

MANAGING A CREATIVE START-UP BUSINESS IN AFRICA

In Africa, the way business is conducted is quite rigorous because one is literally up against a lot. Talk about high illiteracy rates, poor infrastructure like power supply, access roads, multiple taxation, etc -  the list continues.

The mere decision to embark on a journey of entrepreneurship frightens most Africans to their bones. Parents are more often than not alarmed at a decision by their ward(s) to tow this unfamiliar and unpredictable path. It is usually a sore topic to discuss in family meetings and is a phenomenon usually associated with people who are not able to secure white collar jobs.

But where are the jobs??
Are there enough jobs in the world to go round everyone??

CLIMATE, WEATHER AND BUILDING COLLAPSE

ABSTRACT
Climate change has become a reality and so has building collapse. Global Reports have already shown serious changes in rainfall volume and timing resulting in heavier floods or in other situations more intense temperature waves.  The science that deals with understanding and employing ethical processes in our daily activities in order to mitigate the negative effects of climate change caused by man's activities is referred to as Green Building or sustainable development. It is sometimes also called sustainable building/design. The idea of sustainable comes in three forms; Environmental sustainability, Economic/ Financial/cost sustainability and Social sustainability i.e. User friendliness/comfort/ health. The challenge of building collapse in  Nigeria is clearly an issue that traverses these three aspects.  This paper examines the occurrence of building collapse in Nigeria from the consultant's view point with a view to highlight the importance of adopting green building practices by Architectural Consultants as the leaders of the building team. Documented cases of building collapse in Nigeria within the past decade are reviewed, the stated causes are highlighted. Furthermore, industry bespoke practises on building collapse mitigation across the globe are studied. These include specifically America, Europe and Asia. A comparative analysis of the sustainable approaches adopted in these climes is drawn. In conclusion, it is recommended that the Nigerian Architect must imbibe these methods to see a future with less or absolutely no cases of building collapse. Keywords: climate change, building collapse, sustainable design, professional ethics, consultants' responsibilities.

KEEP WORKING EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE EMPLOYEES

LAW: Excerpt from the book
48 Laws Of Architectural Consulting

KEEP WORKING EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE EMPLOYEES
Don’t hire staff to replace you, hire people to help you keep being great at what YOU do.

As is very common with every business owner or professional practitioner, the moment they find someone who can stand in for them at work, they become lazy and start skipping their own CEO duties. The tendency to become slack with tasks that they ordinarily would have attended to keenly sets in and this is a natural human feeling often fueled by the belief that they (employees) are being paid to do ‘the work’ therefore we don’t have to do anything, any more.

DIGITAL SCHOOL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS - For Emerging Africa

Use of digital tools such as websites, portals, apps, etc to facilitate school management and administration is increasingly being embraced in Africa. What is already common place in Europe and America seems to just be picking momentum in these parts due to obvious social and economic reasons. The advancements in information technology affecting several walks of life has always been pioneered by the western civilizations leaving us in Africa playing catch-up; a game which we seem to be very good at. As heavy consumers of information technology products, consistently developed by others, the gap in technology naturally positions Africa as a huge market for such technological products.

JUST3DIT - NIGERIA'S #1 SPEEDO 3D ENGINE - A Review

Just3dit.com.ng is an innovative platform where Architects and Builders are allowed to order a very speedy rendering of their on-going projects after signing up with their basic information. The idea of such a platform is to challenge the time factor attributed with production of Architectural three dimensional views to its barest possible - 24 hours.

One can initiate such order from a personalized dashboard by uploading floorplans of the work in any format available. The accepted file types include .dwg, (preferred) .rvt, .skp, .jpg .png .pln After uploading the floorplan the customer is prompted to make an advance payment after receiving a quote. On receipt of the payment, the model is generated within 12 hours and submitted to the customer for his review and approval before rendering which is the final step. The excellent shot 3D views are generally ready in less than 24 hours of receipt of payment.

AN EVALUATION OF BUILDING HEIGHT EFFECTS ON THERMAL COMFORT IN HIGH-RISE OFFICE BUILDINGS IN THE TROPICAL ENVIRONMENT

PROPOSED TITLE OF THESIS                                          An Evaluation Of Building Height Effects On Thermal Comfort in High-rise Office Buildings in the Tropical Environment

SYNOPSIS
INTRODUCTION
Nigeria as a developing economy situated in the tropical climate zone is faced with a number of economic and environmental challenges when it comes to the development of her housing sector. High-rise buildings provide a borrowed but welcome solution to some of these challenges but however must be adapted to suit our own climate and weather conditions. The problem this study is concerned with solving is that of thermal discomfort experienced in high-rise office buildings in the hot humid tropical environment mostly due to arbitrary transfer of western Architectural styles. This study aims to evaluate the possible influence of increase in building height on indoor thermal comfort in high-rise office buildings in the study area with a view to understand the behaviour of high-rise buildings in our climate and thus provide guidelines for the future design of such buildings in the tropical area. The research gap this study intends to fill is easily observed in the plethora of literature from research works addressing related issues like thermal comfort in low-rise office and residential buildings, building height effects on outdoor thermal comfort of a city, but none has actually addressed the possible effects of increase in building height on indoor thermal comfort in high-rise office buildings within the tropical environment. The objectives to aid the achievement of the aim above include: Survey of existing high-rise office buildings in the study area and their constructed heights, empirical assessment of indoor thermal comfort in the sample high-rise buildings at different floor levels during working hours, qualitative assessment of indoor thermal comfort in the sample high rise buildings at different floor levels during working hours, use of statistical analysis tools to compare results from the empirical and qualitative assessments and statistical analysis of experimental results to establish significant relationship(s) between building height and indoor thermal comfort (if any).

IN THE WAKE OF AN UNDESIRABLE WAR - NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXAMINATION (P.P.E) VS. ARCHITECTS REGISTRATION COUNCIL OF NIGERIA ARCON (A.C.P)

kosi-emmanuelchukwujindu
kosi-emmanuel-chukwujindu
The Nigerian institute of Architects N.I.A professional practice examination P.P.E held in two diets annually has just been concluded for the year 2017. No other exams organised by the institute will be held in the year 2017. In the wake of the growing impasse between the veteran examination conducting body and its national cousin; the Architect's Registration Council of Nigeria ARCON,  mixed feelings engulfed almost every examinee this year. The disagreement which has been described by many as everything including 'embarrassing' is rumored to be hinged on major administrative, tribalist and financial related prejudices.

The Nigerian Institute of Architects, N.I.A set up in April 1960 has been the body responsible for pre-qualification of candidates and conduction of professional practice competence examination in the country, while the Architects registration council of Nigeria had hitherto relied on her for advice on successfully qualified candidates to be furnished with a practice license and a seal. This meant that once one scaled through the notoriously revered N.I.A exams, he/she was expressly admitted by ARCON and is deemed qualified to practice the profession of Architecture within Nigeria.
While this bi-laterral qualification requirement/proceedure had been questioned by many due to its rigorous nature, it had been accepted to be the 'norm' for over twenty (20) years.

HOW TO FIX THE MISSING 'CONFIGURE SWITCHABLE GRAPHICS' OPTION ON AMD RADEON GRAPHCS CARD

I am an Architect and I use a HP pavillion G6-2304tx laptop with a dedicated AMD Radeon graphics card asides the basic Intel graphics card. The reason I requested a laptop with a dedicated graphics card was to enable me use Lumion (app) in rendering my Revit-Architecture models. I bought this PC back in 2013 when I had just rounded off my M.Arch degree from SRM University, Chennai and it was quite pricey at the time. Four(4) years down the line, the laptop, is still working perfectly, and has helped me land and deliver a lot of wonderful projects. But something happened. One day, one of the staff, accidentally pours water into the keyboard. We quickly rushed to a service centre where the Engineers opened the laptop up and tried to sun-dry. Four (4) straight hours of intense sunshine, was allowed before it was put back together, only it developed more problems.

First the keypad typed selectively, some keys wont work in upper case while others didnt work at all. But this was not a big deal, I just bought and replaced the HP keypad, and it was back in order. The major problem resulted when, I tried to work on a project on lumion as usual. I discovered serious graphic inconsistencies and when I checked I realised the 'configure switchable graphics'kosi_emmanuel_chukwujindu

option which usually shows up when I right-click anywhere on my desktop (as shown in the image) was missing.

I found a way to

BUILDING DECONSTRUCTION - ISSUES & METHODS

When its time for an old or defunct building to go down, many think of demolition as the first option. There is however an alternative method that has gained recognition for its green characteristics. It is called Building De-construction.

Demolition is the Traditional method of simply destroying a building or structure, reducing it down to a pile of rubble and waste which is collected and removed from the site. This is a hazardous process because it fills the nearby air with harmful dust, vapors and other compounds that are harmful to human beings. With this method, 'everything' goes to 'waste'.
Deconstruction on the other hand advocates for a more careful process of dis-assembly of buildings to recover the maximum amount of re-useable and or recycleable materials in a safe, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective manner. The materials thus recovered can be reused on the same site for a new construction, sold or donated to another site.

ARCHITECT: 5 Reasons Why You Should Learn A 3D Application

If you are an Architect and you desire to improve your professional practice with sure-fire techniques that have worked for me; you may like to consider the e-book: 48 Laws of Architectural Consulting. Architectural Visualization is simply the art of producing graphical presentation-drawings that assist us in understanding the intentions of the Architect for a particular project. It ranges from two(2) dimensional plan drawings to three(3) dimensional perspective presentations as shown above.

Now, Whether you are a student or a practicing professional, you will find need to produce one of these at some point, either for academic purpose or for the use in convincing a client about a particular delivery option. In order to do this, some basic knowledge of one or more CAD software /application package is pertinent. Yes, of course you could always hire an Architect to produce this for you (if you do not already posses the skill set necessary to deliver it) each time the need arises.

However, if you are young and still capable of doing your own drawings, it is wiser to settle for a simple drafting tool that will enable you market your ideas faster and more profitably to your client(s). There are plenty of reasons why you should know a 3D drafting package.

Consider these:
1. It puts the Magic in your Presentation (Convincing Power)

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Presentations that feature one or more three(3) dimensional elements seem to captivate clients more than those that mostly contain text and too much technical details. No matter how functional your space planning is, If the client does not see enough visual content in the form of pictures, slides, videos, etc you may still struggle at convincing him. But try splashing some pictures here or there in-between the slides and watch him fall in love with your Architecture.

2.  It gives you a Better Shot At Conveying Your Ideas To Your Team Members

Sometimes you have a great idea, a really awesome one, but you just can't find a way to relay this to a client or your principal. You end up trying to explain more than you need to. If only you knew a way to depict exactly what you intended for the building to look like, maybe you wouldn't have to rely on someone else who may produce something short of it.

3.  It is very handy for Mop-Up Presentations with tight Deadlines (Time Saving)
SOme CAD applications can produce the three dimensional view of your proposed structure once you complete the floor plans accurately. Imagine how time efficient this feature can be when you are on a very tight deadline. Although, Rendering times may differ for different packages according to the degree of finishing required, with the right PC configurations and a little training you can still deliver your projects in good time.

4. You Can Make Some Extra Money
Who says you cant make some extra cash rendering projects for your team members and others. Everyday, everywhere, somebody needs a 3D visualization Consultant to produce either still images or video animated walkthroughs for a project or another. You can be the one who gets that call and delivers as required. You will be amazed at how much money this will translate to at the end of the month, every month, if you take it seriously.

5. You will Become a Resource Person
Who do you go to when you need help rendering a project? When you have been the 'go-to' guy for all things Archi-Viz for a while in your company, school, team or neighborhood, and you have consistently delivered on all assignments, then you will become the sage. Everyone will come to respect your authority and skill, soon you will find yourself more important than you thought, because you have actually succeeded in carving a niche for yourself.

HOW TO CREATE STUNNING ARCHITECTURAL ANIMATIONS & WORKING DRAWINGS IN TWO(2) WEEKS

Architect-kosi-Emmanuel-chukwujindu
If you are looking for how to create stunning Architectural animations, walkthroughs and complete working drawings and specifications that help you to put the WAWW!! on your client's face, then you are not alone in your search. Thousands of Architects, Engineers, students and ordinary researchers have been redirected to this page right after performing a simple google search.

Architectural presentation has simply moved on from the era of hand-drawn sketches to an age dominated with the increasing demand for computer generated(aided) design and drafting (hereafter referred to as C.A.A.D). Some Architects attribute this to the perceived superiority of the print quality (presentations) versus the hand made. Others say it simply saves time and improves their productivity, while some think it is simply a matter of how opportuned the Architect or Engineer is in learning the relevant C.A.A.D application packages.

The project is a five(5) bedroom duplex. Its site is the private residence of an extended family hosting an existing six bedroom bungalow which was taken down to erect the new duplex and a smaller bungalow.

The rubble from the deconstruction process was reused in leveling of the site which has a gentle slope to the rear. The wood recovered from the roof was reused for some form-work during construction. The old bungalow was enveloped by the new duplex footprint which saved time and allowed for removal of only conflicting walls.others were levelled and used as fill in the new foundation.

Its internal features include a 4m high headroom main lounge in the ground-floor which flows into a 5m x 5m wide dining hall. The kitchen is complete with store and a door that leads the residents to the rear side of the house where they can interact with the existing bungalow, an ante - room with a visitor's toilet.
